Four persons have been reported dead while one person sustained injury when three suicide bombers (two men and a female) attempted to gain access into the University of Maiduguri before security operatives halted them, and in the process the IEDs strapped to their bodies were detonated, killing themselves and the university security staff and injuring a soldier.
According to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) information officer, North-east, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, the injured was taken to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) after administration of first aid while the corpses of the dead were deposited at the Borno Specialist Hospital by the NEMA ERT team.
“Today, 13/05/2017, at about 1:10am, three suicide bombers, two men and a woman attempted to gain access into university of Maiduguri, but were sighted by the university security who stopped them for interrogation. While interrogating them, the two suicide bombers detonated their explosives devices which injured one of the securities and killed another.
“The third suicide bomber who hid close to the vicinity of a church in the university later detonated her explosive which affected the structure of the church with no casualty. The injured was taken to UMTH after administration of first aid while the corpses were deposited at Borno specialist hospital by the NEMA ERT team “, Abdulkadir Ibrahim said.
Further confirming the incident, the Borno State Police public relations officer, DSP Victor Isuku, said the soldier who was reportedly injured in the explosion is currently receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, adding that the command’s EOD team were dispatched to sanitize the scene and the vicinity of the campus for general safety while normalcy has since been restored.
