Bus carrying women and children to Mother's Day event plummets down cliff in Turkey and hits car to kill at least 23 and leave 11 others critical

Turkish authorities say at least 23 people have died and 11 others are in critical condition after a tour bus tipped over, fell 15 meters (50 feet) down a cliff and then hit a car on a serpentine mountain road.

The passengers - mostly women and children - were travelling to a Mother's Day celebration.

Mother's Day falls tomorrow, Sunday May 14 in Turkey - but this year it will be met with mourning in the homes of those killed in this tragic crash, the cause of which is still unknown.

Deputy governor of Mugla province, Kamil Koten, told Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency that the driver is among the dead and most of those killed were women.

Cicek said the passengers were all Turkish and the cause of the accident is unclear, pending investigation.

Anadolu said the bus was in a convoy of six, carrying mostly women and children for a Mother's Day event.

"Sadly, we have had fatalities and others seriously injured," said Amir Cicek, the governor of Mugla province, who said the bus was carrying about 40 people, many of whom were women
